Anti-Capsize & Other Safety Systems

Anti-Capsize System

Heel and trim are permanently monitored at high frequency. In case of overtaking the defined thresholds, the computer activates the predetermined safety procedure:

  1. action on the autopilot alarms;

  2. release of the sheets according to the defined profile and the context; and

  3. recording of the event

For example, when the boat sails upwind with autopilot, when heel exceeds a threshold defined by the user, the autopilot will luff up until heel decreases. The autopilot will then go back to its initial instruction.

Automatic Release of the Sheets from a Magic Trim Hydraulic Ram

This system manages the point of sail (upwind/downwind), the tack, and the configuration of sails.

Measurement of the following is performed by an external inertial motion unit:

  • Accurate boat speed and heading

  • Longitudinal acceleration

  • Vertical acceleration (lifting foils)

  • Three-axis angular accelerations (heave, sway, surge)

  • Three-axis angular speeds (roll, pitch, yaw)

  • Heel and trim angles

  • Latitude and longitude

  • Vertical positioning (lifting foils)

The load measurement in the rigging is a key element for the good management and conduct of a sailboat, especially on big multihulls. It is the starting point to determine and check loads applied to the boat under the influence of the wind, the sea and the way of sailing. The Magic Trim system uses various sensors and technologies to measure the strengths in static and dynamic conditions. These sensors are specially designed for the marine environment and perfectly adapted for the Air Yacht.

Management of Wind Gusts & the Resulting Safety Procedures

The wind data is permanently monitored. In case of passing the predetermined thresholds, the safety procedure is activated according to these presets, which results in:

  1. Alarms

  2. Change of instruction to the autopilot

  3. Release of the sails

  4. Recording of the event

Thresholds can be defined on the following data:

  • True wind speed absolute value

  • Apparent wind speed absolute value

  • True wind speed gradient

Shallow Depth Monitoring

The water depth thresholds are linked to a maximum speed. In case of a critical situation, the predefined safety procedure is activated:

  1. Alarm

  2. Release of the sails

  3. Emergency stop of the boat under autopilot

Man-Overboard Management

This is an effective function that increases the chance of recovery of a man overboard.

Activate the MOB sources:

  • MOB button

  • MOB AIS beacon

This results in the following:

  1. Alarm

  2. Automatic release of the Jon Buoy

  3. Release of the sails

  4. Emergency stop of the boat with autopilot

  5. Automatic display of the MOB page on the Control Centre and the display

  6. Activation of the MOB function on the navigation system

  7. Distress signal emission

  8. Recording of the event

Collision Avoidance

This system calculates collision courses from the data delivered by the AIS. In the case of a critical situation, the computer starts the predefined safety procedure, according to the imminence of the danger:

  1. Alarm

  2. Foghorn

  3. Navigation lights and projectors

  4. Release of the sails according to the defined profile and the context

  5. Action on the autopilot

  6. Recording of the event

Accident Logging

A time-stamped recording of the accident noting all the variables of the behaviour of the boat is kept for 15 days – useful for both understanding and insurance.
